The
Birmingham Boys Club (the name was changed to the
Boys &
Girls Clubs of Central Alabama in 1990
to reflect the extension of membership
to girls) was chartered in 1901. The
Club was originally organized by a
group of local women who wanted to
give underprivileged boys a chance in
life. After operating in several shared spaces the first Club was
built in downtown Birmingham in 1924 by the Kiwanis Club. The Club
has grown from
a meager beginning with just a few
young boys to serve over 12,000
children per year at eleven different
sites in three counties. In 2001, the
Club celebrated its 100th anniversary
making it one of the oldest Boys & Girls
Clubs in America.
"The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Alabama
is proud to be a
United Way of Central
Alabama agency and is a member of the Boys
& Girls Clubs of America."
