My name is Lajarrid Baker and I am a former member of the Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama.

I grew up in a low-income public housing community in Brookside, Alabama. As a young boy my friends and I began getting into trouble. There were no activities in the community for children and few adults at home to offer guidance and support.

When the BGC opened a club in Brookside I quickly joined and was surprised to see what an impact it would mean to the youth and the community. My friends and I finally had a safe place where we could receive homework assistance, play sports and find a structured, nurturing home.

The BGC provided me a structured environment that taught me good character, responsibility and the rewards of working hard. I had a positive influence in my life, away from all the negative elements in the community.

Now, as an adult, a husband, father and a teacher I find myself relying on the same core values I learned at the BGC. More importantly, as a teacher of seventh graders, I try and instill in them these same values. The BGC and the values and lessons they teach work. I am proof of that.

To the BGC, I thank you for helping establish a strong foundation in my life and providing a positive place for me to live, learn and grow. I am forever grateful.
